Kindergarten

Explore Kindergarten at the OCSB

Choosing a school for your little one is a big decision. When it’s time for your child to start Kindergarten, consider an Ottawa Catholic school. We do more than teach your child information– our staff works together to nurture your child ensuring your little one is supported, equipped and encouraged to grow into the person God designed them to be.

We’re all about flexibility

This global pandemic has demanded us to be creative and flexible with how we offer Kindergarten, and we’ve stepped up to the challenge by working with families to come up with solutions. For some families, it works best to only send their child for in-person school a few days a week, while others feel the full-day program five days a week is the best option for their child. Whatever solution works best for your family, your child’s safety and wellbeing are our top priority. We’re eager to work with you to come up with a plan that works.

Take a virtual tour!

Since we can’t welcome you into our schools for a tour, we thought we’d bring our classrooms to you! Explore your child’s future Kindergarten class with the magic of 3D technology.

Welcoming families of all faiths

Children who are baptized Catholic or have a parent that is baptized are automatically eligible to attend one of our schools. Students of all other faiths are also eligible as long as we have space in the school. At this time, all of our schools have space to welcome non-Catholic children.

It takes a village

When your child starts Kindergarten, they are supported by a team of talented and caring educators and support staff that included English and French-speaking teachers and early childhood educators.

Learning through play

Our two-year Kindergarten program, commonly known as Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten, is designed to give your child a great foundation to learn. We work with your child to explore a variety of subjects through the power of play.

Helping your child identify and regulate emotions

In Kindergarten, we help your child learn to identify their emotions and feelings and regulate them through different activities. This will help your child as they continue to grow and mature.

French options at every school

All Ottawa Catholic schools offer pathways for your child to learn French at your neighbourhood school. In Kindergarten, your child will receive half of their instruction time in French, and half in English.

Developing skills to last a lifetime

To prepare your child for the future, we use an approach to teaching called Deep Learning. It’s learning that sticks with you for life. The building blocks of Deep Learning are the six competencies of collaboration, character, critical thinking, creativity, communication and citizenship. By helping your child build these competencies, we know your child will be ready to take on any career, even if it doesn’t exist today.

Register for school

If your child turns four by December 31, 2021, they can start school in September 2021. Registration for the 2021-2022 school year opens in January.

It’s not too late to send your child to Kindergarten for the 2020-2021 school year! Your child can attend Kindergarten in person, part-time or full-time. We’ll work with you to meet your family’s Kindergarten needs.

Supported School Readiness Program

Help your child start school on the right foot through the Supported School Readiness Program. Offered in partnership with the Licensed Home Child Care Network of Ottawa, this program offers home visits and support during the first weeks of school to all children entering Kindergarten for the first time. Families participating in this program connect with a Child Development Advisor leading up to the start of school who will share resources and suggest activities to prepare your child for school. When school starts they will also be at the school during the first week to help your child transition to Kindergarten. Register in January to take full advantage of the program!
