Accessibility Committee

Accessibility at the OCSB

The Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) is committed to providing accessible places to work and learn. We are making sure that people with different needs feel welcomed and accommodated, whether they are students in our schools, visitors to our buildings, or our very own employees.

Our Accessibility Committee meets several times a year to work on making our schools and online information tools accessible by all. The OCSB Accessibility Plan includes practices and procedures which fulfill our obligations to the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and the Ontario Disability Act (ODA).

Working towards 2025 with our accessibility plan

Our Accessibility Multi-Year Plan is a document that is always evolving. We review it often to make sure it reflects the changing needs of our staff, students, and visitors. During the last several years, we have been working to identify, remove, and prevent barriers to people with disabilities. We will continue to work towards providing full access to all Board properties by 2025.

Online workshops for our employees

We have online workshops for our employees which provide a short overview of two different regulations for people with disabilities. Upon completion of the online tutorials, employees will receive a certificate of completion. The first is the accessibility standards training program, which defines and explains terms such as disability, duty to accommodate, and undue hardship, among other things. The second is the integrated accessibility standards online workshop, which looks at the purpose of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and who must comply with their regulations.

Guide dogs and service animals in our schools

We are happy to accommodate people who need to have their guide dog or service animal with them in one of our facilities. We know that these service animals are essential to the health and safety of the people they serve. Service animals are allowed to stay with their owners on Board property which is open to the public, unless another law excludes the permission of the animal. If the animal is not permitted due to another law, then the OCSB will use other measures to provide services to the person with a disability.

Service disruption notices

Our Board and school facilities are equipped with services that enhance accessibility, including service ramps and elevators. Sometimes, these services malfunction or need repair.

When an accessible service is unavailable, the Board or school facility will post a Disruption of Service Notice inside the building, as well as on their school website. This keeps everyone fully informed until service can be restored.
