Building a Future at the OCSB Elite Skilled Trades Academy

Not every student dreams of sitting behind a desk. Some want to build, create, repair, and work with their hands while making a real impact in their communities.

At the OCSB, students are discovering meaningful and rewarding futures through the Elite Skilled Trades Academy (ESTA).

For students passionate about Automotive Service, Carpentry, or Masonry, ESTA offers an opportunity to turn talent and curiosity into a rewarding career pathway.

More Than “Shop Class”

The OCSB Elite Skilled Trades Academy prepares students for success in high-demand industries where technology, creativity, and hands-on expertise come together every day.

Skilled trades careers create opportunities for students with a wide range of strengths and interests. Artists can create objects that are both functional and beautiful. Students who enjoy math can apply precision and problem-solving skills to complex projects. Team players and critical thinkers can thrive in collaborative environments while developing leadership skills for the future.

At ESTA, students gain practical experience while building confidence, character, and technical expertise.

Opportunities That Set Students Apart

ESTA students benefit from unique opportunities that help them build a strong foundation before graduating from high school.

Apprenticeship Training While in High School

One of the most distinctive features of ESTA is the opportunity for students to attempt Level 1 Apprenticeship Certification while still in secondary school. Students receive industry-led training, preparation for Ministry certification testing, and the support they need to succeed.

Through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP), students can also begin collecting apprenticeship hours while completing their high school diploma. Students may even access paid apprenticeship opportunities before graduation.

Dual Credits and Specialized Learning

Students can earn both high school and college credits through dual credit opportunities, helping them get a head start while exploring post-secondary pathways earlier.

Many students also complete a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM), earning a red seal on their diploma that demonstrates specialized training and career readiness.

Hands-On Learning with Modern Technology

ESTA classrooms and training environments reflect the realities of today’s industries. Students work with modern tools, equipment, and technologies while developing real-world skills through experiential learning.

Building Community Through Skilled Trades

At the OCSB, skilled trades education is also rooted in Catholic values and service to others. ESTA programs give students opportunities to use their skills in service of others and their community.

One recent example is the Rebuilding Wheels, Rebuilding Lives initiative, where ESTA Automotive students partnered with United Way East Ontario and Surgenor GM to refurbish a donated vehicle for a deserving community member. Experiences like this allow students to see firsthand how their work can positively impact families and communities.

Our Spiritual Theme calls us to Open Doors, Build Bridges, and Nourish New Beginnings. ESTA reflects that call in meaningful ways. Students are building pathways for their futures while using their talents to support others and strengthen their communities.

The program also reflects our Strategic Commitments to Be Community, Be Well, and Be Innovative by helping students discover their strengths, explore rewarding career opportunities, and gain the confidence to succeed in a rapidly changing world.

A Strong Future Ahead

As technology and artificial intelligence continue to reshape many industries, skilled trades remain essential. Canada continues to experience a significant demand for skilled tradespeople, creating strong employment opportunities across the country.

For many students, the skilled trades offer:

  • Strong job security.
  • Early financial independence.
  • Opportunities for entrepreneurship and business ownership.
  • Meaningful, hands-on careers where they can see the impact of their work every day.

Explore the Possibilities

Students interested in learning more about the skilled trades can speak with their Guidance Counsellor about the OYAP pathway and ESTA opportunities available through the OCSB.

Students wishing to join ESTA must complete the ESTA Application Form.

The future is being built every day, and OCSB students are already helping shape it.
