Frequently Asked Questions

I’m a Qualified Teacher. How do I Apply for a Permanent Classroom Position?

The primary entry point for securing a permanent contract with the Ottawa Catholic School Board is through the Occasional Teacher (OT) Roster. The roster serves as the foundational pathway for long-term career advancement.

While permanent positions may be advertised externally, the Board prioritizes internal recruitment from our existing OT staff. Joining the supply list creates greater opportunities for you to demonstrate your professional capabilities in our classrooms, meet our Principals, and establish a strong performance record  that leads to a permanent contract.

The OCSB Career Path:

  1. Roster Placement: Join the OT Roster (Supply Teaching).
  2. Long-Term Occasional Contracts (LTO): Applying for Long-Term Occasional positions (e.g., covering a maternity leave).
  3. Permanent Eligibility: Receive a positive evaluation after a four-month LTO to qualify for permanent postings.
  4. Permanent Contract: Secure your permanent classroom contract.

What are the Requirements Regarding the Pastoral Reference? Do I Need One to Apply?

We are committed to our Catholic mission and value the traditions that define our educational environment. As such, the requirements for a Pastoral Reference differ depending on the stage of your career with the OCSB:

  • For the Occasional Teacher (OT) Roster: A Pastoral Reference is not a mandatory requirement to join the supply list.
  • For Permanent Contracts: A current Pastoral Reference from a Catholic church is the standard requirement.
  • Tip: If you are working toward a permanent career with us, we strongly encourage you to build a relationship with your parish priest early in the process.

I Have a Resume and Cover Letter Ready. Can I Email Them Directly to the Human Resources Department or a Principal?

To ensure fairness and consistency, we do not accept applications via email, paper submission, or fax. All applications must be submitted through our official recruitment platform, ApplyToEducation. This ensures your file is complete and visible to our recruitment team.

What Documents do I Need to Upload to my ApplyToEducation Profile?

To prevent delays in processing your application, please ensure your profile includes:

  • Your current Resume and Cover Letter.
  • Your Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) Certificate of Qualification.
  • Practicum Teaching Reports (for new graduates) or most recent evaluation.
  • University Transcripts.
  • Contact information for two professional references who supervised your work.

Are You Looking for Specific Qualifications (e.g., French, Tech)?

We are actively recruiting qualified teachers for all divisions and subjects. Due to current system needs, we are prioritizing the hiring of all qualified educators. Whether you are a Generalist, FSL qualified, or a Technological Education teacher, we want to hear from you. Please ensure your specific qualifications are clearly highlighted in your application.

I am Currently Completing my Bachelor of Education. Can I Apply Before I Graduate?

Yes! We welcome applications from teacher candidates at any stage of their studies (Year 1 or Year 2). You do not need to wait until your final year to start your relationship with the OCSB.

Please apply to the specific job posting titled “Occasional Teaching – B.Ed Students”. You will simply need to update your portfolio with your practicum reports and OCT certification as you complete your program milestones.

How Will I Know if I Have Been Selected for an Interview?

We review applications on an on-going basis throughout the school year. If your qualifications meet our current needs, you will receive an interview invitation directly through the ApplyToEducation system.

What Our Community Is Saying

The only way I can describe it, is that it is a gift to be a part of these children’s lives, and it is incredibly fulfilling to help them overcome challenges and be there to celebrate their successes.

Renee Lacroix
Educational Assistant, Chapel Hill Elementary School

My experience working at the Ottawa Catholic School Board has been incredibly fulfilling, as it provides a supportive, collaborative environment where I am able to grow professionally while making a meaningful impact on the lives of students and the broader community.

Sandy Fontaine
Resource Teacher, St. Brother André Elementary School

The OCSB has cultivated a welcoming and inclusive environment where staff are encouraged to bring their authentic selves to work. The Board’s commitment to EDI, particularly in advocating for marginalized communities like 2SLGBTQ+ students and staff, reflects its dedication to creating a safe and supportive space for all. Additionally, the camaraderie among colleagues—sharing challenges, laughter, and professional growth—has strengthened my sense of belonging.

Tanya Noble-Moore
Vice-Principal, St. Francis Xavier High School

Teacher, St. Paul High School
