Opening Doors Across Generations
For 75 years, St. Mary School has been a place where students have learned, grown and built lasting connections. Generations of families have passed through its doors, gathering for school Masses, Christmas concerts, graduations, and the many everyday moments that become part of a school’s story.
On May 20, the St. Mary School community came together to celebrate the school’s 75th anniversary, marking an important milestone for students, families, staff, alumni and community members both past and present.
Throughout the day, former students returned to walk familiar hallways once again, this time alongside children and grandchildren who are now creating memories of their own at St. Mary. Conversations quickly turned to favourite teachers, school performances, friendships and stories that have stayed with people long after leaving the school.
That connection across generations was present throughout the celebration and served as a reminder of the lasting impact a school community can have over time.
A School Rooted in Faith and Community
Faith has long been at the heart of student life at St. Mary School. Through school Masses, strong parish connections and shared experiences, students are encouraged to live their faith through kindness, service and care for others.
The anniversary celebration reflected those values in meaningful ways. Current students helped welcome guests, staff connected with former colleagues and alumni shared stories and memories from decades past.
The strength of the school community could be seen in the relationships built over generations. For many families, St. Mary is more than a school. It is a place filled with memories, friendships and a strong sense of belonging.
A Day of Celebration
The day began with a special anniversary Mass attended by students, staff, invited guests, dignitaries and community partners. Following the liturgy, guests gathered for a reception and school tours, giving many alumni the opportunity to revisit classrooms and spaces that had once been part of their daily lives.
In the evening, the school welcomed alumni, former staff, current families and members of the wider community for a community open house.
Across both celebrations, laughter, storytelling and reconnecting filled the hallways. Guests shared memories of school plays, sporting events, graduations and the teachers who helped shape their lives.
These shared experiences continue to connect generations of families to St. Mary School long after students leave its classrooms.
“A 75th anniversary is about far more than the age of a building,” said Jennifer Divell, Principal of St. Mary School. “It is about the people, families, faith, traditions and memories that have shaped this school community for generations. It was wonderful to welcome former students, staff and families back to celebrate this milestone together.”
Building Bridges Across Generations
This year’s spiritual theme, Open Doors, Build Bridges, Nourish New Beginnings, was beautifully reflected throughout the anniversary celebration.
The event provided an opportunity to reconnect with former classmates and colleagues, honour the generations who helped shape the school community, and celebrate the students who continue to bring St. Mary School to life each day.
As St. Mary School celebrates 75 years of Catholic education, it also looks ahead with gratitude and hope to the many students and families who will continue to walk through its doors in the years to come.
