The room buzzed with excitement, energy and anticipation.
As suspense filled the room, students from St. Gabriel gasped as they heard their characters’ names being sung. The space came alive with music created by high school students sitting proudly in the audience, who had used the Gemini Song Tool to carefully craft and compose original theme tracks. These songs served as the exciting intros to each scene!
And the characters about to step into the spotlight? They began as ideas imagined months earlier by Grade 6 students.
Then the performances started.
Group by group, drama students from All Saints High School took to the stage to bring original student-created stories to life. Laughter echoed throughout Hub350 as students from St. Gabriel watched characters they had first imagined and developed through School AI and Canva suddenly appear on stage, complete with voices, costumes, personalities and stories of their own. All Saints Tech Design students created the backdrops to complete the vision, allowing the audience to be fully immersed in each scene.
You could feel the connection in the room.
Students cheered for one another, laughed together and watched their ideas grow into something bigger than anyone expected. High school students encouraged younger peers while teachers looked on proudly, and in that moment, students realized their creativity truly mattered.
This was more than a showcase.
It was a celebration of creativity, mentorship, collaboration and the courage it takes to share ideas with others.
Where Creativity and Technology Worked Together
Over several months, students explored the connections among the arts, technological education, and Artificial Intelligence through a collaborative project that brought elementary and secondary students together in creative and meaningful ways.
In a series of immersive workshops, elementary students brought their own original characters to life, using AI as a creative support tool. High school students then expanded those ideas into original scripts, dramatic performances, imaginative set designs, music, costumes and 3D creations while staying true to the younger students’ original vision.
Throughout the process, students brainstormed together, solved problems, communicated ideas, experimented creatively and learned from one another.
The technology itself was impressive, but what stood out most was the way students used it to deepen creativity, storytelling and human connection rather than replace them.
Students also designed the event logo during a workshop challenge that required them to meet specific design criteria. Every single submission was incredible, making it tough to narrow them down before a final vote selected the winning design. That logo was proudly projected on the stage throughout the showcase and even appeared on the celebratory cookies gifted to the students.
Watching Student Ideas Come to Life
What unfolded throughout the showcase was far more than a series of performances.
There was something powerful about watching students see their imaginations reflected back at them on stage. Characters that once existed only in conversations, Canva AI creations and brainstorms, suddenly had voices, movement and personalities. Entire worlds had been built around ideas students bravely shared months earlier. In a special extension of the project, every student was gifted a 3D-printed model of their character- a powerful symbol of what can happen when creativity meets technology to turn imagination into reality. The smiles across the audience said everything.
And while the performances and technology drew plenty of attention, it was often the quieter moments that stayed with people most.
The laughter during the drama skits.
The cheering after performances.
The conversations happening around the immersive technology stations and 3D printers.
The excitement of sharing autographs in their very own souvenir Playbill.
And the look on students’ faces when they realized their ideas mattered enough to be celebrated on a professional stage.
Students were not simply attending an event.
They were being seen, encouraged and celebrated.
For many students, it was the kind of learning experience that stays with you long after the curtain closes.
Building Bridges Between Students
This year, the Ottawa Catholic School Board continues to focus on Building Bridges through relationships, belonging and community, and this project reflected that beautifully.
The experience created authentic, inspiring cross-curricular and cross-panel connections between elementary and secondary students.
Younger students watched older peers honour and elevate their creativity while high school students embraced mentorship, leadership and collaboration throughout the experience. Students from different schools, grades, and interests worked together toward a shared goal while learning from one another and celebrating each other’s strengths.
You could see those bridges forming throughout the day.
Younger students looked at the high school students with admiration and excitement. Older students embraced opportunities to encourage, support and guide younger learners. Staff created spaces where students felt comfortable sharing ideas, taking creative risks and celebrating one another’s successes.
The result was a learning experience rooted in encouragement, confidence and connection.
The Partnerships That Made the Experience Possible
This incredible opportunity was made possible by dedicated educators and community partners who believed in creating authentic learning experiences for students.
Both the workshop day and the final showcase took place at Hub350, a coworking and event space located in Canada’s largest technology park. The space created an inspiring environment where creativity, innovation, and student learning could naturally come together.
The Ottawa Catholic School Board extends sincere thanks to the Skills Council of Canada for helping create opportunities for students to explore creativity, technology and learning in meaningful ways.
“Special thanks also go to Brad Loiselle, Mark Cairns, Robin Guy, Mme Laroche, Ms. Leblanc, Ms. Pasini, Mr. Black, Ms. Calucci, Ms. Donaghy, Ms. McCarthy, Ms. Stoqua, Ms. Wood and everyone involved who guided, encouraged and supported students throughout every stage of the experience.”
When Student Voice Takes Centre Stage
At its heart, this experience reminded everyone in the room of something important:
When students are given opportunities to create, collaborate and share their ideas, incredible things happen.
Their confidence grows.
Their creativity grows.
And sometimes, the ideas that begin quietly inside a classroom end up centre stage, inspiring an entire room.
