OCSB Black History Month 2022 focused on Black Joy. Black Joy celebrates and recognizes the diversity and beauty of Black identities and respects the positive growth that stems from them. In 2023 we extend the theme of Black Joy to include Inspiring Change.
“Each one, teach one” is from an African proverb that originated in the era of enslavement. When one enslaved person gained knowledge or skills, including learning to read or write, they would teach another. So their skills could multiply within their community. As we continue to honour Black Joy and move forward, we keep the tradition of “Each one, teach one” alive by using our knowledge to teach others and inspire change.
Inspiring Change Through #ocsbBlackJoy
Black Joy has inspired social movements world-wide that reach far beyond art & sport. Inspiring Change through Black Joy by sharing stories of Black Joy will inspire black youth to dream big and break down barriers. Every month, we invite students, staff, parents and the wider community to look at what we can share to promote collective action. Use the hashtag #ocsbBlackJoy to share how you are participating in Black Joy this Black History Month.
#ocsbBlackJoy Video Contest
The Ottawa Catholic School Board proudly announces the second annual #ocsbBlackJoy Video Contest! This contest is a platform for OCSB students to show what celebrating Black Joy means to them. The deadline to submit a video is Friday, March 3, at 5:00 pm. This year’s winners will be unveiled during a ceremony on March 29, 2023, at 7 pm, at Notre Dame High School. If you are looking for inspiration, please look at last year’s winners.
Recognizing Champions of #ocsbBlackExcellence
We want to recognize staff members (teaching or non-teaching) who have gone above and beyond supporting Black excellence within their school community. That is why we are also bringing back the OCSB Champions of Black Excellence nominations!
Please honour OCSB employees who go above and beyond to foster and encourage #ocsbBlackExcellence in our community by nominating them. You can also tell it to the world by giving them a shout-out on social media using the hashtag #ocsbBlackExcellence. The deadline for submission is Friday, February 17, 2023.
Look Out for Events All Month Long
We have several events in the works for Black History Month at the OCSB. Please keep an eye on this website and all our social channels, as we will announce them soon.
