Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM)

The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a Ministry-approved specialized program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting their high school graduation requirements. The program also help students transition into their chosen path once they graduate. By taking a specific cluster of courses, students gain specific skills and knowledge related to their chosen field.

Benefits of taking a SHSM in high school

Students who successfully complete an SHSM receive an an Ontario Secondary School Diploma with an embossed red seal, a record documenting their achievements, and formal recognition on their Ontario Student Transcript.

Students also gain:

  • a customized high school education suited to student interests and talents
  • the development of specialized knowledge and skills
  • earned credits which are recognized by post-secondary institutions and work sectors
  • targeted training and certifications relevant to a chosen career
  • experience documented through the Ontario Skills Passport
  • reflection on career goals while remaining flexible to the option of shifting pathways
