How are school calendar dates determined?
Easter holiday dates change each year. While holiday dates like Christmas are fixed and easy to remember, Easter and its associated holidays can fall anytime between March 22 and April 25. The date of Easter changes because the full moon can fall on different days in different time zones. Once the date of that moon is known, Easter Day and the Easter holidays can be determined.
The Ministry stipulates that the school year calendar shall include a minimum of 194 school days, of which school boards are required to designate three mandatory Professional Activity (PA) days for provincial education priorities and may dedicate up to four additional PA days per school year, for a maximum total of seven PA days. The remaining school days shall be instructional days and a total of ten instructional days may be designated as examination days.
The development of the calendar was the result of deliberations by the Executive Committee, in consultation with the superintendent responsible for the school year calendar at our co-terminus board, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. The Ottawa Student Transportation Authority is kept apprised of our process. Input on the proposal was received from the school year calendar committee, comprised of representatives from the Catholic School Parents’ Association, the Parent Involvement Committee, the Catholic Principals’ Council–Ottawa, represented union groups and non-affiliated groups, as well as the Board’s student trustees.
