Celebrating a Polish Tradition: Pasowanie na Ucznia

Smiles, excitement and a wonderful sense of pride filled St. Nicholas Adult High School this past weekend as first-grade students celebrated a milestone they will remember for years to come. Surrounded by their families, teachers, and community, students took part in pasowanie na ucznia, a cherished Polish tradition that officially welcomes them as students. As part of the OCSB Continuing & Community Education International & Indigenous Languages Program – Elementary, the celebration brought Polish language, culture, and community together in a meaningful and memorable way.

A Special Welcome to the School Community

Pasowanie na ucznia, which translates to “initiation as a student,” is a traditional ceremony held in Polish schools, often marking the beginning of a child’s formal school journey. The ceremony is similar in spirit to a knight’s knighting ceremony, with students making a solemn pledge to be hardworking and to show respect for their teachers and families.

In the Polish Language Program, the tradition was brought to life with plenty of excitement and a sense of achievement. Site Administrator Magda Bronowska made the ceremony official with the iconic shoulder tap, using a giant pencil to symbolically welcome each student as a new member of the school community.

Celebrating Language, Culture and Community

The celebration was made even more special by the presence of Monika Zuchniak-Pazdan, Consul of the Republic of Poland, who joined students and their families and brought thoughtful gifts, including bags filled with school supplies for the first graders.

Students, families, teachers, and community members gathered to celebrate this important milestone together. The joyful ceremony was accompanied by live guitar and violin music, creating a warm and memorable celebration.

For students, pasowanie na ucznia was more than a ceremony. It was an opportunity to celebrate their language learning, connect with their families and community, and discover and appreciate the Polish language and culture.

Growing Through Language and Culture

Experiences like this are an important part of the OCSB Continuing & Community Education International & Indigenous Languages Program – Elementary, where students have opportunities to develop language skills while exploring the cultures, traditions, and communities connected to the languages they learn.
