More Than a Thrift Store
What started as a classroom project quickly became something much bigger for a group of Holy Trinity students.
As part of the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Entrepreneurship Program (SEP), nine students came together to create Fitcheck, a student-run thrift store with a goal of making affordable fashion accessible while giving back to the community.
From developing a brand and collecting clothing donations to designing the store and managing sales, every aspect of the business was led by students. The experience gave them the opportunity to apply what they were learning in the classroom while developing valuable skills in entrepreneurship, teamwork, marketing, customer service, and financial management.
Building a Business from the Ground Up
Creating Fitcheck required careful planning, creativity, and collaboration.
Students worked together to establish their vision, build awareness for the store, organize inventory, and create an inviting shopping experience for their customers. Along the way, they learned firsthand what it takes to launch and operate a successful business.
The project also encouraged students to think beyond profits. From the beginning, they wanted their work to make a meaningful difference in others’ lives.
Fashion with a Purpose
In just one week of sales, Fitcheck raised more than $1,100.
The proceeds were donated to three organizations that support young people and families in our community:
- Canadian Mental Health Association
- Children’s Aid Foundation
- Operation Come Home
By choosing charities focused on mental health, youth support, and community well-being, students demonstrated that entrepreneurship can be a powerful tool for positive change.
Learning Through Real-World Experience
Projects like Fitcheck help students connect classroom learning to real-world experiences. They challenge students to think creatively, solve problems, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively toward a shared goal.
Perhaps most importantly, the project showed that when young people are given the opportunity to lead, they can create initiatives that strengthen their communities and inspire others.
Through Fitcheck, Holy Trinity students built connections, supported important causes, and demonstrated that a simple idea can have a lasting impact.
Congratulations to the Team
Congratulations to the nine student entrepreneurs behind Fitcheck, as well as the staff who supported them throughout the project. Their creativity, compassion, and commitment to helping others transformed a business idea into an initiative that made a real difference in the community.
