What Parents Need to Know at the Start of the School Year

The first days of school can feel exciting, emotional, and—let’s be honest—a little overwhelming. So, we’ve gathered everything you need in one place to help your child start the year strong and help you feel organized and supported along the way.

Here’s what you’ll want to bookmark, click through, and keep handy as we head into the school year together:

Mark Important Dates

Let’s start with the basics: when school starts, when it’s closed, and everything in between. The 2025-26 School Year Calendar has it all—first day, holidays, PD Days, breaks. It’s a good one to print and pin to your fridge or sync with your Google calendar.

Kindergarten Parents – The OCSB uses a gradual entry schedule to help young learners confidently ease into their new environment. Check your school’s Kindergarten and Extended Day Program (EDP) gradual entry details so you know what to expect.

Stay Informed and Connected

The key resources at these links will help you stay connected with your child’s school throughout the year. Review them at the start of the year to ensure that everyone has the information they need. Also, remember to check your school website regularly for school announcements and events.

School Messenger

All of our OCSB schools use the SchoolMessenger communication platform to send automated phone calls and emails to parents. Choose how you want to be contacted by creating a SchoolMessenger account and setting your notification preferences.

Parent Portal ›

Once you register for the Parent Portal and activate your account, it becomes your go-to resource for all information related to your child’s education. You can view your child’s class schedule, report cards, and attendance records. The Parent Portal is also where you go to complete and submit school forms. Please complete the Consent for Use and Disclosure of Information, Off-Site Permission, and Responsible Use of Technology forms at the start of each school year. The Student Verification form should be completed whenever there is a change to your contact information.

Transportation ›

Student transportation to OCSB schools is provided by the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority (OSTA). You can download their app or check their website to stay informed about bus cancellations and delays.

Student Health ›

If your child has a medical condition or illness, you can access the forms you need to provide your school with the necessary health information before school starts.

OCSB Connect ›

The OCSB Connect service offers a secure and anonymous way for Grade 7 to 12 students to report incidents of bullying, safety concerns, or criminal activities directly to school staff. Review the information with your child so they are aware of the service.
