Digital Citizenship Day: Helping Students Be Safe, Smart, and Responsible Online

Our students are growing up in a world where they can connect with friends, explore new ideas and find answers to almost anything with just a few taps on a screen. But not everything they see online is true, not everyone they encounter has good intentions, and the choices they make online can have very real consequences. That’s why, at the Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB), we’re teaching students that being a good digital citizen isn’t just about staying safe. It’s about knowing right from wrong, treating others with kindness and respect, and making thoughtful choices, even when no one is watching.

Guiding Children Through the Digital World

Parents play a crucial role in helping children develop essential skills for navigating the digital landscape. Engaging in regular discussions about online experiences, social media, gaming, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and digital reputation can empower children to make informed decisions. It also ensures they know where to seek support when necessary. Building trust and maintaining open communication are often the most effective strategies for helping children navigate the digital world safely.

Being a Good Samaritan Online

Digital Citizenship Day also aligns closely with the OCSB’s Samaritan on the Digital Road Program, which encourages students to be caring, responsible members of their school communities. Just as students are called to show kindness, respect, and compassion in person, they are encouraged to bring those same values into their online interactions. Whether standing up to cyberbullying, supporting a peer, reporting inappropriate content, or using technology responsibly, students can be Good Samaritans in the digital world as well.

Keeping Your Child Safe Online

The OCSB’s Safe, Smart and Responsible Online Safe, Smart and Responsible Online webpage brings together helpful information and resources to support families as they guide their children through the digital world. Whether your child is just beginning to explore technology or is already navigating social media, there is information to help you along the way.

Supporting Families in the Digital Age

Sometimes, knowing how to start a conversation about online safety is half the battle. The Ontario Digital Families resource offers parents and caregivers practical advice and conversation starters on everything from social media and gaming to privacy, artificial intelligence and healthy screen habits.

Working Together for Digital Success

Technology will continue to change, but the values we teach our children remain the same. By working together, families and schools can help students make good choices, treat others with respect and become responsible digital citizens.
