June Brings a Season of Reflection
June has a way of inviting us to look back.
We celebrate graduations, concerts, awards, field trips, and the many milestones that mark the end of another school year. We say goodbye to routines that have shaped our days and prepare for new beginnings waiting just around the corner.
For many students, staff, and families, this season brings excitement. It can also bring uncertainty in transitions, reflection, and even a little sadness as familiar chapters come to an end.
In the midst of all these emotions, this month’s Spiritual Theme invites us to reflect on what it means to be a living bridge.
A bridge connects people. It creates pathways where there were once barriers. It helps us move forward together.
When viewed through a mental health and well-being lens, being a living bridge means helping others feel connected, valued, and supported. It means creating spaces where people know they belong and reminding one another that no one has to navigate life’s challenges alone.
Mental Health and Well-Being Grow Through Relationships
One of the most powerful contributors to positive mental health is connection.
A caring conversation. A welcoming smile. An invitation to join a group. A teacher who notices when a student seems quieter than usual. A friend who checks in. A colleague who offers support during a busy week.
These moments may seem small, but they matter.
Research consistently shows that a strong sense of belonging helps support positive mental health and well-being. When people feel connected to others, they are better able to cope with challenges, build resilience, and navigate change.
At the Ottawa Catholic School Board, we see this every day. We see students welcoming new classmates, older students mentoring younger learners, staff creating classrooms where every learner feels valued, and school communities coming together to support one another through both celebrations and challenges.
These everyday acts of kindness and connection are living bridges. They strengthen our sense of community and remind us that we are stronger when we walk alongside one another.
Living Bridges Across the OCSB
Throughout this school year, we have witnessed countless examples of students, staff, and families serving as living bridges.
We have seen students reach out to classmates who felt alone. We have watched educators create spaces where every student feels seen, heard, and valued. We have celebrated school communities that have rallied around families during difficult times and rejoiced together during moments of success.
These moments may not always make headlines, but they matter deeply.
These moments serve as a powerful reminder that mental health and well-being are nurtured through every single connection we forge. A classroom where every learner belongs. A friend who truly listens. A staff member who offers support. A family rooted in its school community. Together, we strengthen the bonds that sustain us.
This is what it means to #BeCommunity. This is what it means to #BeWell.
And this is how we continue to build bridges every day.
Building Skills for Life
Positive mental health is not about avoiding challenges. It is about developing the skills, relationships, and confidence needed to navigate them.
Every day, students across the OCSB build these skills through learning experiences that encourage collaboration, communication, empathy, creativity, critical thinking, and responsible citizenship.
These experiences help students learn how to solve problems, work with others, ask for help when they need it, and support those around them.
Just as importantly, they help students understand that they do not have to face challenges alone.
Living Bridges During Times of Change
June is filled with transitions.
Some students are preparing for high school. Others are moving to a new grade or a new school. Staff members are celebrating accomplishments while looking ahead to a new year. Families are preparing for summer routines that will soon replace the familiar rhythm of the school day.
Even positive change can feel overwhelming.
Being a living bridge means helping one another move through change with confidence and support.
A bridge does not remove the journey. It simply helps us cross safely.
As adults, we can help children and youth navigate change by listening, validating their feelings, maintaining routines where possible, and reminding them that support is always available. Sometimes, simply being present is the most meaningful support we can offer.
A Challenge for June
As we close out the school year, consider how you can be a living bridge for someone else.
- Reach out to someone you have not spoken to in a while.
- Welcome someone into a conversation or activity.
- Offer encouragement to a student, colleague, friend, or family member.
- Express gratitude to someone who has made a difference in your life.
- Take time to strengthen a relationship that matters to you.
Small acts of connection can have a lasting impact.
You never know when a kind word, a listening ear, or a simple gesture of support might be exactly what someone needs.
Supporting Our Community
Strong relationships play an important role in supporting positive mental health and well-being. At times, however, students, families, and staff may need additional support.
The Ottawa Catholic School Board offers a variety of mental health and well-being resources through its Well-Being Toolkit. Families can also access information, tools, and supports through provincial and community organizations dedicated to student mental health.
Seeking support is a sign of strength. Reaching out early can make a meaningful difference.

Moving Forward Together
As we prepare for summer, let us remember that the work of building bridges does not end when the school year does. The OCSB is with our students and families year-round.
The relationships we have built, the kindness we have shared, and the support we have offered one another throughout the year continue to shape our community long after the final school bell rings. These are lifelong memories and commitments.
Wherever the months ahead take us, we are called to be people who connect rather than divide, who welcome rather than exclude, and who support rather than stand apart.
On behalf of the Mental Health and Well-Being Team, we wish all OCSB students, staff, and families a safe, restful, and joy-filled summer.
As we look ahead to September, may we continue to open doors, build bridges, and nourish new beginnings wherever we go.
Because sometimes, the bridge someone needs most is simply knowing they do not have to walk alone.
