Welcoming Our New Board Chaplain: Father Gerard Monaghan

At the end of this school year, Father Gerard Monaghan will begin his new ministry as Board Chaplain for the Ottawa Catholic School Board.

Father Gerard brings a steady presence and a deep sense of care. He listens first, responds with compassion, and walks alongside others in faith. Many of you already know him from his previous roles with the OCSB—as a teacher, Chaplaincy Leader, System Support Chaplain, and most recently, Faith Animator with Leadership and Parent Engagement.

His leadership beautifully reflects our Spiritual Theme: Open Doors, Build Bridges, Nourish New Beginnings. He opens doors through honest conversation, builds bridges by showing up with empathy, and nourishes new beginnings by reminding us that faith grows through relationship and presence.

Father Gerard’s path to this role is rooted in both pastoral and educational leadership. He has previously taught Religion, English, Drama, Civics, Careers, and Math. He led chaplaincy at St. Joseph High School and has supported adult faith formation and system liturgies.

In addition to his role with the OCSB, he is the parish priest at St. Faustina in Cumberland, and he is the Episcopal Vicar for English Clergy in the Diocese of Ottawa-Cornwall. He holds degrees in Education, Theology, Pastoral Theology, and Business.

“Father Gerard brings a deep understanding of our schools and a longstanding commitment to faith development within our Catholic learning community,” says Tom D’Amico, Director of Education. “His leadership is grounded in experience, reflection, and compassion—qualities that make a meaningful difference in the lives of students, staff, and families.”

“His presence has already shaped our system in meaningful ways,” adds Mark Mullan, Chair of the Board. “Whether in schools, parishes, or at the Board table, Father Gerard’s grounded leadership and care continue to make a lasting impact.”

As we welcome Father Gerard into this role, we also pause to thank Father Peter Sanders, who is retiring after 35 years of dedicated service.

Father Peter has been a trusted guide and a source of pastoral wisdom across our Board. His humour, humility, and steady presence have shaped our faith community in ways that will be felt for years to come. We are deeply grateful for his ministry.

Please join us in welcoming Father Gerard and offering our heartfelt thanks to Father Peter for 35 years of service to the OCSB.
