Imagine a young leader who embodies the spirit of service, faith, and global citizenship. Meet Olantu Nini, a Grade 12 Immaculata High School student whose remarkable journey inspires her peers and community. From representing Canada on the world stage to making a difference in her local community, Olantu’s story is a testament to the power of leadership and dedication.
A Global Peace Ambassador in Bangkok
Earlier this year, Olantu represented Canada as a UN Global Peace Ambassador at the Global Peace Summit 2025 in Bangkok, Thailand. She joined 400 youth delegates from 46 countries to explore the theme “Empowering Future Leaders for Global Peace.” The summit provided opportunities for dialogue, networking, and workshops designed to equip young leaders with the skills and knowledge needed to advocate for peace.
Reflecting on her experience, Olantu shares: “Attending the Global Peace Summit was an amazing opportunity to learn from others, build a passion for peace-building, and understand how transformative change can address world issues. It’s not just about recognition; it’s about the responsibility we carry as young leaders.”
Her journey to Bangkok began in the fall when she applied through Young Politicians of Canada—a non-profit organization seeking youth delegates for this prestigious summit. By the winter, Olantu was selected as one of 21 Canadian representatives, showcasing her commitment to fostering peace and creating meaningful change.
Celebrating Black Excellence
Olantu’s leadership extends far beyond international borders. In February, she was honoured with the Community Builder Leadership Award during Black History Ottawa’s Opening Ceremony. This award recognizes Black youth leaders who positively impact their schools and communities. Chanda Jones, a Black graduate coach with the Ottawa Catholic School Board, nominated Olantu, stating, “Her contributions exemplify service and empowerment.”
At Immaculata High School, Olantu actively participates in initiatives that promote inclusion and faith. She is a member of the Black Students Association, Team Mikinak, and the Bible Study group. Her role as a Children’s Liturgy Leader at Holy Canadian Martyrs Parish holds special meaning: “It is rewarding to see young people learn and mentor them in the right way,” she explains. “Teaching kids about the Bible inspires me to do better each day.”
A Leader Across Communities
Olantu’s impact spans across Ottawa through her involvement in various organizations:
- Member of the Ottawa Police Youth Advisory Committee
- Youth Ambassador for the Together We Can Mentorship Program with the Somali Centre
- Youth Leadership Council member of the Social Planning Council of Ottawa
- Member of the Black Legacy Gala Planning Committee
Her ability to balance academics with community service speaks volumes about her dedication to making a difference.
Looking Ahead
As Olantu approaches graduation this spring, she has ambitious plans for her future. She hopes to attend Carleton University to pursue a degree in Public Administration and Policy Management—a path that aligns perfectly with her passion for leadership and advocacy. Whether as a policy analyst, diplomat, lawyer, or teacher (or perhaps all four!), Olantu is determined to continue serving others.
Her story reminds us that leadership isn’t just about accolades—it’s about using our gifts to uplift those around us. The Ottawa Catholic School Board celebrates Olantu Nini as a shining example of what it means to lead with heart and purpose.
We look forward to seeing all she will accomplish in this next chapter!
