OCSB to Lower Flags in Honour of Murray Sinclair’s Legacy of Truth, Justice, and Reconciliation

The Ottawa Catholic School Board joins all Canadians in mourning the passing of the Honourable Murray Sinclair, Mizanay Gheezhik, “The One Who Speaks of Pictures in the Sky.” Justice Sinclair was a true champion of truth, justice, and reconciliation, leaving an indelible impact on education throughout Canada. In tribute to his extraordinary life, we will lower our flags for one week, reflecting on his lifelong commitment to helping all Canadians—especially students—understand the true history of this land.

As Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Justice Sinclair challenged us to create a more inclusive curriculum that respects and celebrates Indigenous history, culture, and contributions. His dedication to truth has profoundly shaped our commitment to ensuring every student has meaningful opportunities to learn about Indigenous peoples, building a foundation of respect, empathy, and understanding within our school communities.

Justice Sinclair’s legacy is a powerful reminder of how education can open the door to conversations and build connections essential for meaningful reconciliation. We will honour his memory by continuing to guide our students toward a more just and compassionate society inspired by his vision.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Murray Sinclair’s family and all those whose lives and work he impacted.
