September 3, 2024, marked the first day of school for all OCSB schools, including the newly opened St. Gianna Catholic Elementary School in Riverside South. This school, along with St. Veronica in Findlay Creek, is one of two new schools opening this year. The day started with a special blessing ceremony led by Father John. As parents dropped off their children, Principal Michelle McGarry and Father John greeted students at the gates while teachers and staff helped students find their classes. Once everyone was settled, Principal McGarry thanked everyone for their efforts in preparing the school for this day.

Father John then led the students in a procession to the front of the school, where he blessed the building before everyone entered the bright and open learning commons. Inside, Father John led prayers and blessed the crucifixes, which will be placed in each classroom. The students were respectful and attentive throughout the ceremony. Father John provided background information on St. Gianna and explained why the school was named after her, inspiring students with her values of faith and courage. At the end of the event, Principal McGarry presented a gift to Father John on behalf of the school community. The ceremony was a great success, bringing together students from diverse backgrounds and celebrating the school’s Catholicity.
