A Horse of a Different Kind: A Special Visit to Holy Family School

It’s not every day that students look out their classroom windows and see two enormous Clydesdale horses standing outside!

But that’s exactly what happened at Holy Family School when two officers from the Ottawa Police Mounted Unit stopped by for an unexpected visit, turning an ordinary school afternoon into something students won’t soon forget.

Some Very Special Visitors

The excitement began when students spotted the horses outside their classroom windows. Before long, curiosity had taken over, and students were eager to learn more about their four-legged visitors.

The officers took time to introduce their horses, answer questions and explain a little about the important work of the Mounted Unit.

For some students, this was their very first opportunity to see a horse up close. And these weren’t just any horses! The gentle Clydesdales, known for their impressive size, certainly made an impression.

There were plenty of questions, smiles and wide-eyed expressions as students discovered just how big these beautiful animals really are.

Learning Doesn’t Always Happen in a Classroom

Some of the best learning opportunities are the ones nobody planned.

What started as a surprise visit became a chance for students to ask questions, make observations and learn something new about the world around them.

It was also a lovely example of Deep Learning in action, particularly curiosity, communication and citizenship. Students had the opportunity to connect with members of their community, learn about their work and experience something many had only seen in pictures or on television.

At the OCSB, our commitment to Be Community is to build connections and help students understand the people and experiences that make up the world around them. Sometimes, those connections happen in the most unexpected ways, even when they arrive on four hooves!

A Day to Remember

A special thank you to the Ottawa Police Mounted Unit for taking the time to visit Holy Family School and share this experience with our students.

For the officers, it may have been a brief stop during their afternoon. For the students who had never seen a horse before, it was something much bigger.

And for everyone at Holy Family, it was a wonderful reminder that a little curiosity and an unexpected visitor can turn an ordinary school day into a lasting memory.

After all, it’s not every day that a Clydesdale comes knocking on your classroom window!
