What does it take to make a difference? Sometimes it’s a big idea, a brave question or a new way of looking at the world. Other times, it’s something as simple as making someone feel welcome, lending a helping hand or discovering what we can accomplish together. This week’s #ocsbFridayFeeling is a celebration of those moments, big and small, that help our students grow into curious, compassionate and engaged members of their communities.
Young builders transformed everyday materials into log cabins and ‘haunted’ mansions, while others brought their bridge designs to life with 3D printing. Kindergarten learners turned their classroom into a bustling farmers’ market, explored numbers through hands-on games and discovered new possibilities in the library. From imaginative play to innovative design, these experiences remind us that learning is often at its best when students have the freedom to ask questions, experiment and bring their ideas to life.
That curiosity extended beyond the classroom as well. Students explored democracy and civic responsibility through a Student Vote, learning how their voices can help shape the communities around them. Others welcomed sports journalist and author Julian McKenzie for an inspiring conversation about the power of meaningful storytelling. Meanwhile, students put compassion into action by designing posters for a Halloween food drive supporting the Barrhaven Food Cupboard, showing how creativity can become a powerful tool for helping others.
Sometimes, the most meaningful lessons are about how we treat one another. Through conversations about mental health, belonging and shared responsibility, students reflected on what it takes to create a classroom where everyone feels safe, respected and included. Elsewhere, thoughtful surprises and small gestures of appreciation offered a beautiful reminder that kindness doesn’t have to be complicated to make someone’s day.
As we Nourish New Beginnings, we’re reminded that building a stronger community begins with the choices we make every day. Whether we’re sharing an idea, standing up for others, trying something new or offering a little kindness, every action has the potential to make a difference. And when those small moments come together, they become something much bigger. 💚🌱
