Some lessons ask us to do more than remember them. They ask us to carry them forward. This week’s #ocsbThursdayThoughts comes at the conclusion of Truth and Reconciliation Week, a time for learning, listening and reflection across the OCSB.
Truth and Reconciliation Week invites us to honour the children who never returned home, Survivors, their families and communities, while deepening our understanding of the lasting impacts of residential schools. It also asks us to consider our responsibility in reconciliation: to listen with humility, learn from Indigenous voices and perspectives, and consider how that understanding can shape our actions.
That responsibility extends beyond a single week. It connects closely with the values at the heart of Catholic education at the OCSB, including community, dignity of persons and justice. Faith calls us to put those values into practice through the choices we make, the way we treat one another and how we care for our communities and the Land.
We saw that spirit of action elsewhere this week, too. Students laced up for the Terry Fox Run, continuing a tradition rooted in hope and helping others. For one educator and 10-year cancer survivor, seeing current and former students run in her honour made that familiar school tradition especially meaningful.
As we Nourish New Beginnings, this week reminds us that moving forward also means carrying important lessons with us. We listen to understand where we have been. We reflect on what those lessons ask of us. And then, through kindness, courage, curiosity and action, we help shape what comes next. 🧡🌱
