What helps a new beginning take root?
That question is at the heart of the final year of the OCSB Spiritual Theme, Open Doors, Build Bridges, Nourish New Beginnings.
The OCSB Board of Trustees received an update on this year’s focus, Nourishing New Beginnings, including the resources and opportunities that will support students, staff and school communities throughout the year.
From monthly reflection prompts and a new student journal to updated Religious and Family Life Education materials, the work reflects an important part of Catholic education at the OCSB: helping students discover that they are known, valued and part of something larger than themselves.
Gathering What Matters
Over the past two years, our Spiritual Theme has invited us to Open Doors and Build Bridges. This year, Nourishing New Beginnings asks us to think about what happens next. A new beginning does not always require adding something new. Sometimes it asks us to notice what is already taking shape, give it our attention, and create the conditions for it to grow.
One idea shared with Trustees was “gathering up the fragments.” It is a reminder to notice the pieces of our days that matter: conversations, relationships, lessons and moments of grace that can sometimes be easy to miss.
We see this every day in our schools. It can be a student being welcomed into a new classroom, a staff member checking in with a colleague or someone offering encouragement when another person is having a difficult day. These moments may seem small, but they are often where a sense of community is built.
Resources for the Year Ahead
New and updated resources will help schools bring the Spiritual Theme into everyday school life.
A monthly calendar will introduce anchor words that invite students and staff to pause, notice and reflect throughout the year. Words such as gather, notice and remember will encourage students and staff to think about how faith is present in the people, relationships and experiences around them.
Students will also have access to the Nourish Journal in print and digital formats, with versions designed for elementary and high school students. The journal gives students a place to pause, notice what is happening in their lives, ask questions and make connections between their experiences, their relationships and their faith.
Updated Religious and Family Life Education resources will provide teachers with additional read-alouds and classroom activities that connect the theme to learning, prayer, and reflection.
Educators also have access to an AI-supported planning tool developed with OCSB values and Catholic education in mind. The tool is designed to support teachers in developing learning and reflection opportunities connected to the Spiritual Theme. Teachers remain at the centre of that planning, deciding how and when the resources best support their students.
What Families May See
Families may see Nourishing New Beginnings reflected in classroom conversations, prayer, school communications and activities that help students get to know and support one another.
Schools are already finding their own ways to bring the theme to life. Some are using welcoming activities to help students make connections. Others are building opportunities for reflection and conversation into the school day.
It will not look exactly the same in every school or classroom, nor should it. What matters is creating communities where people are known, welcomed and invited to participate in the life we share.
Moving Forward Together
Nourishing New Beginnings is not about adding something else to an already busy school day. It is about noticing what is already happening in our schools and being intentional about the relationships, faith and care that make our communities stronger.
Throughout this final year of our Spiritual Theme, Trustees will continue to see how the theme is taking shape across the OCSB, and we will continue to share those stories with our wider community.
What appears small can carry within it the possibility of something much greater. Nourishing new beginnings means learning to notice these moments, give them our attention, and make room for what God may be growing among us.
