Who was Mike Baine?

Mike Baine dedicated 35 years of his life to education and made significant contributions as an award-winning OCSB educator, Vice-Principal, Principal, Superintendent, and volunteer. He played a vital role in our board, and his kindness, love, and dedication to his family and friends were admired by many. Mike was known for his unique ability to connect with everyone he met and always kept in touch with them.

Mike’s contributions extended far beyond his time at the OCSB. After retiring, he dedicated himself to consulting and volunteering. He played a crucial role in introducing substance abuse prevention and treatment programs, as well as improving access to mental health services. He later became the Youth Services Bureau Chair and was on CHEO’s board of directors.

Mike’s grit and tenacity were the stuff of storybooks. He was always up for a challenge and took every opportunity to test himself. As a lifelong athlete, he was constantly training for something – from race weekends to epic hikes and climbs through mountainous terrain spanning hundreds of kilometres and countless borders, most notably through the Alps. No challenge was too big for him to tackle.

As a testament to his character, after he was diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer, he dug in and walked 21 kilometres during a race weekend. His efforts raised over $100,000 for The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre.

Mike passed away in February 2023. Throughout his journey, he remained full of smiles, jokes, and laughter, leaving a lasting impact on those around him.
