St. Matthew Students Gain First-hand Business Experience

Our Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program lets students try out career options while still in high school. At St. Matthew High School, students enrolled in the Business SHSM are getting a headstart on their careers as they apply their classroom knowledge to come out on top in the annual Ontario Business Educators’ Association (OBEA) contest.

This Year’s OBEA Winners

St. Matthew High School student Tucker Shields won first place in this provincial business contest for the second year in a row. This year, he claimed the top spot in the business leadership segment.

Fellow students Jacob Bowles and Tommy King claimed second place in the marketing segment with their innovative campaign to boost sales and awareness of Bauer’s one-of-a-kind hockey stick. The dynamic duo impressed judges by highlighting Bauer’s Sling Blade technology!

OBEA usually hosts its fall award ceremony in Toronto every year, but they cancelled the luncheon because of the pandemic. Instead, Jacob and Tommy will receive their awards in the mail just in time for the Christmas holiday.

St. Matthew’s History With OBEA

Since the Business SHSM program at St. Matthew began in September 2018, students have risen to the challenge and stepped into the winner’s circle every year. Winning an OBEA contest takes creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication – it’s Deep Learning in motion.

Congratulations to the 2021 achievers, Tucker Shields, Jacob Bowles, and Tommy King! We would also like to give a shout-out to St. Matthew’s past OBEA winners. We are proud of your achievements, and look forward to following your careers!
