Listening to Families
Following extensive feedback from families and the community, the Ottawa Catholic School Board of Trustees unanimously voted to rescind the previous decision to eliminate bus attendant positions. Bus attendants serving students in Developmental Education programs will remain in place and services will continue without interruption.
Trustees heard from families, Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) members, advocacy organizations, staff, and community partners about the impact the proposed change would have on students and families. Their feedback reinforced the important role bus attendants play in creating a safe and supportive transportation experience and providing reassurance to parents and caregivers.
Listening and Responding
“Over the past several weeks, trustees have listened carefully to families and heard directly from those most affected by this decision,” said Chair of the Board Mark Mullan. “Parents and caregivers spoke passionately about the difference these supports make in the lives of their children. We listened, we reflected, and we unanimously agreed that continuing bus attendant services is the right decision.”
Working Together
“I want to thank everyone who took the time to share their experiences and perspectives,” said Mullan. “Families, SEAC members, staff, and community advocates helped shape this outcome. While these conversations were not always easy, they reflected something we all share: a commitment to doing what is best for students. We are grateful for that partnership and remain committed to working together in support of every learner.”
Next Steps
As a result, staff will:
- Maintain bus attendant positions serving students in Developmental Education programs;
- Continue current bus attendant supports for eligible students;
- Work with transportation providers to support consistent and reliable service;
- Review staffing and recruitment strategies to strengthen the long-term sustainability of the position; and
- Communicate this decision to affected families, staff, transportation partners, and community stakeholders without delay.
Student Safety Remains the Priority
Student safety, well-being, and equitable access to education remain at the centre of the Board’s work. Trustees remain committed to ensuring students receive the support they need to attend school safely and consistently.
Further Information
Further information will be shared directly with affected families, staff, and schools in the coming days.
