Sometimes the best ideas begin with a simple question.
At St. Brigid School, Grade 2 students are learning that their creativity can do more than brighten a classroom. It can also help others. As part of their Social Entrepreneurship Project, the students are decorating and selling cupcakes to raise funds for the Ottawa Humane Society.
The students chose the charity themselves. Their reasoning was heartfelt and direct. They love animals and want to help care for them.
That spirit of kindness quickly turned into a colourful classroom filled with icing, sprinkles, and excitement. But behind the frosting was something deeper. The students were learning how their ideas can support their community and how even young learners can take meaningful action when they see a need.
And this project is only getting started. In April, the students will continue their efforts by making animal-themed keychains to sell to their fellow students at St. Brigid, raising funds for animals who need care and protection.
A Small Question That Opened a Door
While planning the cupcake decorating activity, one question came to mind. Had the students ever collaborated with a high school hospitality class?
That question opened a wonderful opportunity.
Leadership students from Immaculata High School joined the Grade 2 classroom to guide the decorating activity and assist with bead-making for the upcoming keychains. For many of the high school students, it was their first visit to St. Brigid.
The result was something special to watch.
Grade 2 students eagerly showed their creations while the older students offered encouragement, guidance, and plenty of patience. Laughter filled the room as cupcakes were decorated, beads were threaded, and conversations flowed easily between students who had never met before.
Moments like these remind us that learning does not only happen through textbooks. Sometimes it happens through connection.
Learning Together
For the younger students, the presence of high school mentors brought excitement and confidence. The Grade 2 students were proud to share their ideas and eager to show what they were creating.
For the Immaculata students, the experience was equally meaningful. Supporting younger students requires patience, leadership, and compassion. It is a chance to guide, encourage, and model what it means to care for others.
This kind of learning strengthens the sense of community that connects our schools. It reminds students that they are part of something bigger than their own classroom.
Creativity That Gives Back
The project also shows how creativity and entrepreneurship can work together in powerful ways. Students are discovering that their ideas can grow into something meaningful. A cupcake sale becomes a way to help animals. A keychain project becomes an opportunity to share kindness with others.
It is learning that encourages students to think about the world around them and to consider how their actions can make it better.
Building Something Bigger
What began as a Grade 2 project has grown into something that connects two schools, supports an important community organization, and helps students see the impact of working together.
The classroom at St. Brigid became a place where younger and older students learned from one another, shared ideas, and discovered the joy of helping others.
It is a beautiful reminder that when we open doors for students to connect, incredible things can happen. Through simple acts of creativity and kindness, they begin building bridges that strengthen our community and create new possibilities for learning.
And sometimes, those bridges begin with something as sweet as a cupcake.
