At the Ottawa Catholic School Board, inclusion isn’t a checkbox—it’s a way of being. It’s present in our classrooms, on our sports fields, and at the heart of every celebration. This week, that commitment made a joyful splash at the 20th Annual OCSB Special Olympics Swim Meet, a milestone event that continues to reflect the spirit of belonging, celebration, and student achievement.
Over two incredible days, more than 400 student athletes from 43 schools took to the pool at the Nepean Sportsplex, cheered on by classmates, staff, families, and volunteers. From the first whistle to the final race, the building pulsed with joy, connection, and unforgettable moments.
Inclusion in Action
At the OCSB, we believe every student deserves to feel seen, supported, and celebrated in their school community. Our approach to inclusion means that, whenever possible, students with special needs learn alongside their peers. Some students require more specialized settings, but our goal never changes: to ensure every learner has the opportunity to grow, thrive, and reach their full potential.
That belief was evident at the swim meet. These students were not just participants; they were teammates, leaders, and celebrated champions. The joy in the building served as a powerful reminder of what is possible when we create environments where everyone feels they belong.
A Community-Led Celebration
What makes this event truly special is that it’s planned and led by the OCSB community. The Special Education and Student Services Department, in collaboration with school Resource Teams, brings the event to life with the support of Special Olympics Ontario as a valued partner. We are especially grateful to Committee Chairs Mark Henniger and Anne Frazer, whose dedication and leadership continue to make this celebration a success year after year.
A heartfelt thank you also goes to the approximately 50 Special Education staff members who provided expertise and care throughout the two-day meet, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and joyful experience for all.
This year’s swim meet was elevated by the compassion and energy of 40 student volunteers from St. Patrick’s and St. Paul’s High Schools. These students cheered from the deck and swam alongside our athletes, offering encouragement and connection in ways that were both moving and meaningful. Their presence exemplified the very best of our school communities.
We also thank Special Olympics Ontario and the City of Ottawa, particularly the Nepean Sportsplex, for their continued partnership and support. Their commitment helps ensure that this event is not just possible, but profoundly impactful—for students, families, and our entire board.
More Than a Swim Meet
This wasn’t just a competition—it was a celebration of ability, belonging, and community spirit. It reflected the values we live by every day: every student matters, and when we lift each other up, we all rise.
