Celebrating the Brilliance Within: OCSB Black History Month 2025

February is a special time in Canada—it’s Black History Month, a time to reflect on the significant contributions Black Canadians have made to our country’s development and history. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of Black individuals and communities, recognizing that Black history is integral to Canadian history.

This year, the Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) embraces the theme: “Shaping Black Futures: Uplifting Voices, Inspiring Innovation.” The theme emphasizes empowerment, creativity, and leadership, encouraging Black students to take pride in themselves, share their perspectives, and imagine a future filled with possibilities. It’s about celebrating Black excellence and helping students see their potential to create meaningful change for themselves and their communities.

As a Catholic community, we are called to stand together in faith, justice, and solidarity. This year’s theme reminds us all to address barriers like systemic racism, celebrate the resilience of Black communities, and build a future where all embrace diversity.

What Does “Shaping Black Futures” Mean?

At its heart, “Shaping Black Futures” is about creating spaces where Black students feel seen, valued, and empowered to thrive. It’s about amplifying their voices, recognizing their talents, and encouraging them to lead with confidence and creativity. It also calls us to honour the legacy of Black leaders who have shaped our world through innovation, advocacy, and resilience.

Through storytelling, art, music, academics, and leadership, we can highlight the diverse contributions of Black Canadians and inspire students to imagine new possibilities for their futures.

Black Canadians have made groundbreaking contributions across every field—from science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to the arts and social justice. Sharing these legacies encourages Black students to embrace their creativity and leadership potential. Leadership opportunities—through school clubs, events, or community initiatives—help develop communication, reflection, and critical thinking skills.

Ways to Celebrate and Uplift Black Voices
Families, educators, students, and community partners all have a role in celebrating Black History Month and shaping Black futures.

Here are some simple ways we can all contribute:

  • Celebrate Black Excellence: Highlight Black Canadians’ achievements— historical figures and modern innovators—through stories, lessons, or family conversations.
  • Share Stories: Encourage students to explore and share their own stories through art, music, writing, or public speaking.
  • Invite Role Models: Schools and communities can invite Black leaders, artists, and professionals to share their journeys and inspire others.
  • Support Creativity and Leadership: Provide opportunities for Black students to lead school or community initiatives that showcase their creativity.
  • Put Faith into Action: Organize service projects aligned with Catholic values that address equity, inclusion, and support for those in need.

A Call to Action
Let us stand together as students, families, and educators to empower Black students, embrace their potential, and celebrate the richness of Black history and culture. By doing so, we can truly live out this year’s theme and shape a brighter, more inclusive future for all.

Recognizing OCSB Advocates of Black Brilliance

We want to recognize staff members—both teaching and non-teaching—who have gone above and beyond to support Black excellence within our school community. These individuals make students feel seen, heard, and valued and contribute significantly to fostering an environment where Black brilliance can thrive.

That’s why we’re bringing back the OCSB Advocates of Black Brilliance nominations! Nominate a staff member who consistently supports and encourages #ocsbBlackBrilliance in our community. You can also give them a public shout-out on social media using the hashtag #ocsbBlackBrilliance.

The nomination deadline is February 21st at 5:00 pm.
