Assumption Spring Bling Creates Lasting Memories

The second annual Spring Bling at Assumption Elementary School was more than a celebration. It was a day that created lasting memories for students, staff, and the wider school community.

Laughter echoed throughout the gymnasium as Immaculata’s mascot, Bernie Mac, greeted students with high fives and fist bumps. The smell of a warm meal filled the hallways while hundreds of smiling faces gathered together in anticipation of a special afternoon centred on community, connection, and care.

Building Bridges Through Community

The event beautifully reflected this year’s Spiritual Theme of Building Bridges, bringing together community organizations, local leaders, and students with one shared goal: supporting Assumption students.

Immaculata’s Grains of Giving and Black Student Alliance (BSA) partnered with The Ottawa Mission and Chef Ric’s to host the sit-down lunch for the Assumption community. The collaboration demonstrated the power of compassion and service, while opening doors for students to experience the strength of community support firsthand.

Leading by Example

Earlier this year, students from Immaculata visited The Ottawa Mission, where they met Chef Ric and learned more about his inspiring work serving vulnerable members of the community.

The Assumption school community also raised funds in support of The Ottawa Mission, and the Spring Bling lunch provided an opportunity to celebrate those efforts while highlighting the importance of giving back.

Student leaders from Immaculata played an important role throughout the event, showcasing the impact of student voice and leadership through Grains of Giving and the BSA. Their involvement demonstrated how young people can help nourish new beginnings through acts of kindness and service.

Serving With Care

Students from Immaculata’s Focus Program, Caring for Others, were also on hand to help make the day a success. These students regularly complete weekly placements at Assumption and were proud to assist with serving lunch to younger students.

Plates filled with chicken, vegetables, potatoes, and gravy were carefully prepared and served by students, teachers, principals, police officers, and community volunteers. Every interaction helped create a welcoming environment where students felt valued and cared for.

For Assumption students who will one day attend Immaculata High School, the event also offered an opportunity to build connections and excitement for the future.

Spring Bling was a powerful reminder that when schools and communities come together, they can open doors, build bridges, and create meaningful experiences that students will carry with them for years to come.
