Joyful Collaboration: Building Bridges for Mental Health

In May, our schools are buzzing with activity. It is a month where we celebrate Mental Health Awareness Week across Canada, but it is also a time when we put our OCSB Spiritual Theme into practice: Open Doors, Build Bridges, Nourish New Beginnings. This month, we focus on one specific action to bring that theme to life: Joyful Collaboration.

Why “Joyful” Collaboration Matters

At first glance, collaboration might just look like working together on a task. But when we add Joyful to the mix, it becomes about mental health and Well-Being. Joyful collaboration happens when we value the person more than productivity. It’s the feeling of belonging that comes when we realize we don’t have to solve every problem or carry every burden by ourselves.

When we collaborate joyfully, we are:

  • Opening Doors: Making sure everyone has a seat at the table and feels welcome to contribute.
  • Building Bridges: Connecting with students and colleagues in a way that reduces isolation.
  • Nourishing New Beginnings: Providing a fresh start for someone who might be struggling, simply by inviting them back into the community.

Mental Health is a Team Effort

Mental Health Week reminds us that “awareness” is just the starting point. The real work happens in our daily interactions. For a student struggling with anxiety or a staff member feeling overwhelmed, a moment of joyful collaboration can be a lifeline.

It tells them: “I see you, I value your gifts, and we are in this together.”

In our classrooms, this looks like group work where every student’s unique strength is celebrated. In our staff rooms, it looks like sharing resources and checking in on one another. These aren’t just “school tasks”; they are the ways we build a culture of well-being.

Living the Theme This May

As we move through the month, let’s look for opportunities to turn our spiritual theme into a mental health practice.

  • Who can you build a bridge to today? Perhaps it’s a student who has been quiet lately or a colleague you haven’t connected with in a while.
  • How can we make our collaboration more joyful? By focusing on gratitude, listening well, and making space for everyone to participate.

Supporting Our Community

While joyful collaboration builds a strong foundation, we also recognize that some journeys require professional support. We are a community that walks together, and that means knowing when to reach out for extra help.

When we Open Doors and Build Bridges through Joyful Collaboration, we aren’t just following a calendar; we are creating a school board where mental health and faith go hand in hand.

As we move through this mental health week, we need to consider the importance of equity and belonging in our efforts to promote mental health and well-being. Having a culturally responsive perspective and openness to students’ diversity adds to the classroom culture and should be enhanced and valued. Empowering student well-being and empowering belonging across our community is of great importance.

We are inviting OCSB staff and families to participate in an on-going Mental Health and Well-Being Week Challenge focusing on Open Doors, Build Bridges, and Nourish New Beginnings. The OCSB Mental Health Team has created a list of mental health- related activities. If you are looking for fun challenges to complete with students or on your own, we’ve got you covered. The activities can be done as a family, as a class, or as a school-wide initiative. For those seeking mental health and well-being support, the OCSB Well-Being Toolkit provides a compilation of resources for parents/guardians, students, and staff.  For parents and guardians who would like additional support, please consider the By Your Side parent/guardian resource from School Mental Health Ontario (SMH-ON).

Feel free to adapt to suit your school’s interests and the individuality of the classroom. Also for your consideration are these at home activities. You can also consider lesson plans for elementary students through Faith and Wellness, or register to take the MHLit courses online. Additionally, School Mental Health Ontario has its Wayfinder tool, which is a sequenced guide to teach about mental health (K-12).

Share what you are doing to care for your mental health and tag us @OCSB_MentalHlth. Please post and share on X for all to see using the hashtags #ocsbBuildingBridges and  #CathEdWeek. We look forward to seeing all the creative ways our OCSB community responds to the challenge!
