You didn’t need a passport to feel like you had stepped into France. Just a visit to the Learning Commons at St. Gianna School.
Menus were being reviewed. Orders were being taken. Conversations were happening in French. There was a steady energy in the room and a quiet confidence in the students as they moved through their roles.
Chien Chaud Chic was open for business.
Led by Grade 6 French Immersion teacher Geneviève Holland, students transformed their learning space into a working French café. This was not about putting on a play. It was about giving students the chance to use what they have learned in a way that felt real.
Deep Learning That Builds Confidence
Students took on the roles of entrepreneurs, servers, and hosts. They greeted guests, explained menu items, and responded in the moment, all in French.
There was no script. Just their knowledge, their instincts, and their willingness to try.
This is where language sticks.
When students communicate in real time, solve problems, and think on their feet, learning moves beyond memorization. It becomes something they trust.
Students Leading the Experience
This did not come together by chance.
Students helped design the menu. They made decisions about how the café would run. They shaped the experience from beginning to end.
That ownership matters. When students see their ideas come to life, they take pride in the work. They pay attention to the details. They want it to succeed.
More Than One Subject
Chien Chaud Chic brought together multiple areas of learning in a way that felt natural.
Students used French throughout the experience. They applied math to pricing and transactions. They used media literacy to create materials that supported the café.
This is Deep Learning in action. Skills are not taught in isolation. They are connected, applied, and strengthened through experience.
A Space Where French Lives
In this space, French was not something to practice later. It was the language of the room.
Students spoke with purpose. They listened carefully. They adjusted when needed.
You could see their confidence grow with each interaction.
What This Represents
Educators create opportunities that invite students in. They connect learning to the world beyond the classroom. They give students the confidence to try, to speak, and to lead.
They open doors. They build bridges. They support new beginnings through the language of Deep Learning, be that in French or English.
At St. Gianna School, a simple idea became something more.
It became a moment where students saw what they are capable of.
And sometimes, that moment looks like a café.
