The most important voices in our schools are our students. Recently, we brought together students in Grades 7 to 12 across the Ottawa Catholic School Board to listen to their experiences and use what they shared to guide what comes next.
This is part of how we continue to open doors and build stronger connections across our system.
Why Students Took Part
Students were invited to share what is helping them succeed, what is getting in the way, and what they would change if they could.
They spoke openly about their learning, their goals, and how connected they feel at school. And they were honest.
What We Heard
There were clear and consistent messages.
Students value strong relationships with their teachers. They want classrooms where they can take part, ask questions, and stay engaged.
They also appreciate the range of courses, clubs, and activities available to them. These experiences are helping them discover their interests and begin thinking about their future.
At the same time, students were clear about what would make a difference. They are asking for more hands-on learning, clearer expectations, and more access to one-on-one support.
Belonging matters. Students want to see themselves reflected in their schools and feel a genuine connection to the people around them. When that happens, students are more confident, more engaged, and more ready to learn.
What Comes Next
This was not a one-time conversation.
What students shared is already helping guide planning at both the school and system level.
Schools will use this feedback to reflect on classroom practices, student supports, and opportunities for engagement. The Student Success team will continue working alongside staff to respond to what students identified as most important.
This is how we continue to build community, support well-being, and create learning environments where students can thrive.
We will also continue creating opportunities for students to share their voices. This work does not stop here.
A Shared Responsibility
Student voice only matters if it leads to action.
These conversations are helping us focus on what students need, where we can do better, and how we move forward together.
Thank you to the students who spoke honestly and trusted us with their experiences. Their voices are helping shape the path forward across the OCSB.
