Opening Doors to Possibility
Every Tuesday afternoon at Assumption Catholic School, you can hear it before you see it. Sneakers on the gym floor, laughter in the halls, and students reading side by side.
Since January 2025, Assumption’s Start2Finish Running and Reading Club has been giving students in Grades 4 to 6 a place to belong, build confidence, and try something new, one page and one lap at a time.
A Place to Be After School
The hours after school can be a tough stretch for some families. This club fills that time in a meaningful way.
Led by teacher Sandrine Nkubito, along with staff, volunteers, and community partners, the program runs from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm and is free for students. That matters. It means more students can take part, feel included, and know they have a place.
Confidence You Can See
This is not just about running or reading. It is about what happens along the way.
Students are building confidence, learning to stick with something even when it is hard, and cheering each other on. You can see it in how they carry themselves, how they support their friends, and how proud they are of what they are doing.
Be Community. Be Well.
This is what it looks like when a school community comes together.
Staff, families, and community partners all play a role in creating a space where students feel supported, included, and cared for. It is active, positive, and supports both well-being and connection in a very real way.
Ready for Race Day
One of the highlights is taking part in the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend, happening May 23 and 24, 2026.
For many students, this is what they have been working toward. Each practice, each lap, each small step builds toward that moment at the starting line.
In the weeks leading up to the race, each student receives a club shirt and a new pair of running shoes. It may seem like a small thing, but it is not. It gives students a sense of pride and helps them feel ready to show up and be part of something bigger.
Last year, close to 50 Assumption students took part. This year, they are getting ready to do it all again, with even more confidence and excitement.
What This Really Means
This club is about opportunity. It is about opening doors, building connections, and making sure students feel they belong.
And sometimes, it is as simple as this. A good book, a run with friends, and a place where you know you matter.
