Adult Learners Shine at St. Joseph’s Black History Month Celebration

Across the Ottawa Catholic School Board, Black History Month is marked with vibrant events, performances and activities in our schools and programs. From music and drama to presentations, art and cultural showcases, these celebrations provide meaningful opportunities for students and staff to come together, honour Black history, and learn from the rich contributions of Black Canadians and communities around the world.

Black History Month Celebration at St. Joseph’s Adult School

At St. Joseph’s Adult School, a special Black History Month celebration brought learners and staff together in a lively, proud and inspiring gathering. For our St. Joseph’s Adult community, this celebration holds particular significance. Our adult learners bring a wealth of cultures, languages and lived experiences into the classroom, and when they come together to honour Black History Month, it becomes more than a learning opportunity; it is a powerful expression of identity, pride and belonging.

Through their performances, presentations, and interactive activities, our learners shared their culture with the audience and offered everyone the chance to learn about Black history and traditions. In doing so, they embodied our spiritual theme, “We Are Called to Build Bridges,” by creating connections, fostering understanding, and strengthening community across cultures.

Showcasing Learner Talent

Learners of all levels demonstrated incredible talent, creativity and dedication throughout the event. The morning began with a warm welcome from Salome Atandi, LINC/ESL Coordinator, followed by opening remarks from Marianne Kayed, Manager of Continuing and Community Education, and also included a thoughtful land acknowledgement.

A particularly moving moment was the singing of O Canada, beautifully accompanied by a heartfelt ASL interpretation from students in our LINC Classes for the Deaf. Their expressive signing brought a powerful sense of unity and belonging to the room, reflecting the spirit of inclusion that defines our community. This meaningful opening set the tone for a celebration rooted in learning, respect and connection.

The gym was filled with rhythm and joy during African songs, including moving singing and piano performances. An international fashion show captivated the audience, celebrating culture and identity, while a lively quiz on famous Black leaders and changemakers engaged everyone in learning.

Other highlights included an exploration of the impact of Black African cuisine on Canadian food culture, a beautiful display of African regional fabrics and colours, an inspiring presentation of “I Have a Dream”, followed by a dramatic performance bringing the story of Viola Desmond to life. Learners also shared presentations on the Congo, Rawlson King and historical Black figures, including the inventor of the folding bike frame, reminding us all of the enduring influence of Black leadership and achievement.

The energy in the gym was unmistakable. Applause, cheers and words of encouragement filled the space as learners confidently took the stage. Weeks of preparation were reflected in every performance. Learners researched, rehearsed and practiced with determination and pride.

Many of our learners are newcomers to Canada, representing a rich diversity of cultures, beliefs and traditions. Their commitment to learning is reflected in their determination to develop and strengthen their English language and communication skills.
