The Minister of Education has issued previously announced updates to the Grades 7, 8 and 10 History curriculum for implementation in the 2026-27 school year. The updated curriculum is now available to all Ontarians, including parents, educators, and students on the Curriculum and Resources website. The existing curriculum remains in effect for the remainder of this school year.
With these updates, in Grades 7, 8, and 10, students will learn about significant contributions of Black individuals and communities to Canada’s foundation as a nation, and the obstacles they faced in the pursuit of building an inclusive and prosperous country.
The Grade 10 History course will also have new learning on extreme political and social ideologies, the Holocaust and rising antisemitism, and the Holodomor famine in Ukraine.
Starting in the 2026-27 school year:
- The Ontario Curriculum: Social Studies, Grades 1 to 6; History and Geography, Grades 7 and 8, 2026, will replace the current curriculum.
- Canadian History since World War I (CHC2D/CHC2P), 2026, courses will replace the current courses.
The intention of issuing the curriculum now is to give educators as much time as possible to familiarize themselves with the new learning in advance of implementation in the 2026-27 school year. As described below, additional resources, supports, and training will be offered in the coming weeks.
Parent overviews are available for Grades 7 and 8, as well as for Grade 10. Please ensure parents and families are aware of the new curriculum and the parent resources.
Implementation Supports
The ministry is committed to supporting educators through training and resources. Please share the following information with your senior team and ensure that principals, vice-principals, educators, and other key staff are aware of the following implementation supports for the revised Grades 7, 8 and 10 History curriculum.
A series of webinars will launch in April 2026 to provide educators with an overview of the revised curriculum. Registration details and further information will be available through the Educator Webinars link. Sessions will be archived for future reference.
A document outlining the key changes in the Grades 7 and 8, and Grade 10 History curriculum is available on the Curriculum and Resources website to build educators’ awareness of the changes that have been made.
The ministry has also engaged education partners and organizations to provide classroom ready resources to support implementation of the curriculum, including:
- Archives of Ontario: various historical primary source materials, including images and audio/visual materials from the Archives Ontario collection. Webinars will be held to guide educators through the resources.
- TVO: modules on Black History and Holodomor with lessons and sample assessment materials, each accompanied by a teacher toolkit. TVO is also revising their online learning courses for CHC2D and CHC2P, to be released in spring.
- Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre: collection of resources for students centered around videos of Holocaust survivor testimonies. Professional development workshops will be offered to support the use of the resources.
- Liberation75: a three-module, classroom-ready student program providing Grade 10 History teachers with curriculum-aligned instructional materials through survivor testimony and structured learning activities.
- Toronto Holocaust Museum: a video resource as part of a ready-to-use, one-period lesson that explores the impact of antisemitism.
Resources developed through these partnerships will continue to be added to the Curriculum and Resources website as they become available in the coming weeks.
Thank you for your ongoing support and leadership in implementing the revised curriculum to ensure Ontario’s students are equipped with the foundational knowledge and skills they need to be prepared for long-term success.
Sincerely,
Yael Ginsler, Assistant Deputy Minister
Didier Pomerleau, Assistant Deputy Minister
