Standing in Prayer & Solidarity with Tumbler Ridge, B.C. School Community

Supporting Our Students and Families In Times of Tragedy

We as a Catholic School Community are deeply saddened by the tragic events that have taken place at a school in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. We will hold the students, families, and educators affected by this loss, and with the wider community in our collective prayers as they begin to navigate the days ahead.

News like this can be difficult for children and young people to understand. Some may have questions, and others may feel unsettled even if they don’t speak about it. In our schools, staff are attentive to student well-being and ready to listen, offer calm reassurance, and provide support.

Our Spiritual Theme, Open Doors. Build Bridges. Nourish New Beginnings, reminds us of the importance of staying connected to one another, especially in uncertain times. We remain committed to working with families to support every child’s emotional and spiritual well-being.

Guidance for Parents and Caregivers

Children and youth may process difficult news in different ways. You may wish to:

  • Ask simple, open questions such as, “How are you feeling about what you heard?”
  • Offer calm reassurance that adults at home and at school are working together to keep them safe.
  • Limit repeated exposure to news and social media coverage.
  • Keep routines as consistent as possible.
  • Watch for changes in sleep, appetite, mood, or behaviour.

If you have concerns about your child’s well-being, please reach out to your school team. We are here to support you.
