February is a time of remembrance, learning, and renewal. During Black History Month, we are invited to reflect on the many ways Black people have shaped Canada’s past, strengthened its present, and continue to imagine its future. For students, families, and educators across the Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB), this month offers an opportunity to engage with Black history not as a single moment in time, but as a living story carried across generations.
This year’s theme, “Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations: From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries,” recognizes the contributions of Black Canadians who helped build communities and create change, often in the face of exclusion and injustice. It also celebrates the brilliance of today’s Black youth, whose leadership, creativity, and voices are already shaping a better future.
As a Catholic community, we are called to build bridges rooted in faith, justice, and solidarity. Black History Month calls us to live this commitment with intention by listening, learning, and taking action against anti-Black racism, so every student feels seen, valued, and a true sense of belonging.
Throughout February, OCSB schools will honour the theme through learning, storytelling, student voice, and community connections. Families and educators can join in by celebrating Black brilliance, inviting guest speakers, encouraging creative expression, and supporting student-led initiatives that highlight Black history, culture, and achievement.
Event Highlights Across the OCSB
Throughout the month, OCSB schools will bring this theme to life through learning, storytelling, creative expression, and student voice. Along with school-based activities and celebrations happening across our system, opportunities this year include:
- Read Aloud with Lady Nadeige Altidor for Kindergarten to Grade 3 students.
- Black History Month: Celebrate the Journey, Advance the Vision (French session) for parents and educators.
- MASC performances by Black artists for students in Grades 3 to 12.
Together, we honour those who came before, celebrate those who lead today, and uplift the visionaries of tomorrow.
Students: Enter the #ocsbBlackHistoryMonth Short Story Contest
Calling all student writers. The #ocsbBlackHistoryMonth Short Story Contest invites elementary and secondary students to honour Black brilliance across generations through storytelling. Stories should be original and connect to our Spiritual Theme, reflecting the power of Black voices, leadership, creativity, and everyday excellence. Selected entries will be showcased and celebrated on our OCSB website. For full guidelines and how to submit, please see the contest link.
