Kindergarten Starts Here: What Ottawa Families Need to Know

Starting Kindergarten is a big moment. For children, it means new friends, new routines, and new discoveries. For parents and caregivers, it often comes with excitement, pride, and plenty of questions.

Kindergarten is often the first big step in a child’s school journey. If your child turns four by December 31, 2026, they can register now for Kindergarten with the Ottawa Catholic School Board. To help you feel prepared for this exciting next step, we’ve addressed five of the most frequently asked questions by families.

1. Do We Have to be Catholic to Register Our Child?

Short answer: No.

OCSB schools proudly welcome children and families of all faiths and backgrounds. While Catholic values shape how we care for one another, our classrooms are inclusive spaces where every child is respected, celebrated, and supported. Diversity isn’t just acknowledged at the OCSB, it’s embraced.

2. How Much French is Taught in Kindergarten? Does My Child Need French at Home?

Kindergarten at the OCSB is fully bilingual (50% French, 50% English), so little ones sing, read, and chat in both languages. No French background? No problem! Students thrive even when their parents don’t speak French; it’s also a great way for families to learn together.

3. Are Before & After School Programs Available?

Absolutely! Most schools (all but three) offer Extended Day Programs (EDP) on-site, either run by the Board or a licensed childcare provider. Registration for EDP begins with an online application through the City of Ottawa Child Care Registry and Waitlist. You can find more information about our website’s Child Care page.

4. How Do We Get the School Bus?

When you register, the OCSB sends your details directly to the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority (OSTA). There is no need to sign up separately for the yellow school bus service. School Bus eligibility depends on your child’s grade level and the distance from your home to the school. You can check eligibility using OSTA’s Bus Planner tool and access OSTA’s FAQ for more information.

5. Why Register So Early?

Great question! By registering now, the OCSB can:

  • Hire the right teachers.
  • Set up classrooms.
  • Help OSTA plan routes.
  • Let families build excitement as September approaches.
