A Royal Welcome: Sacred Heart Students Meet King Charles III

It’s not every day you get to meet a king. However, for 52 students from Sacred Heart Catholic High School, that day came on May 26, when they had the honour of welcoming His Majesty King Charles III during his official visit to Canada.

The students were there representing the inaugural Bronze-level cohort of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award—a program that encourages young people to explore their strengths, serve others, and grow through challenge. Their participation opened the door to this once-in-a-lifetime moment.

Celebrating 25 Years of Wisdom, Faith, and Purpose

This special experience happened in a milestone year for Sacred Heart, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary. With over 2,500 students and a motto of Wisdom, Faith, Purpose, Sacred Heart is a thriving school community where students are encouraged to lead with compassion, grow in faith, and take on new challenges.

A Strong Start for the Duke of Ed at Sacred Heart

This was Sacred Heart’s first year offering the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award; the response has been inspiring. Teacher Marika Bujaki, who previously ran the program in the UK, brought it to life here in Ottawa, giving students a new way to engage, serve, and develop confidence.

To earn their Bronze Award, students committed to at least one hour per week in three key areas:

  • Volunteering – Supporting their local communities
  • Physical Recreation – Staying active and focused on wellness
  • Skill Development – Learning something new and stepping outside their comfort zones

Plans are already underway to expand the program next year to include the Silver Level, building on the strong foundation these students have created.

Meeting the Monarch Who Champions Youth Potential

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, founded in 1956 by Prince Philip, has encouraged generations of young people to lead, serve, and explore. King Charles III, who held the Duke of Edinburgh title until 2023, has long supported the Award and its impact.

Standing face-to-face with the monarch who champions the program made this day especially meaningful for Sacred Heart students. It was a moment of connection, recognition, and pride—one they will not soon forget.

Adventure Begins Where Comfort Ends

The royal handshake was just the beginning. Hours after their historic meeting, the students set out on the final part of their Bronze-level challenge: the Qualifying Adventurous Journey.

It involved long-distance hiking, overnight camping, and navigating as a team through unfamiliar terrain. More than just a hike, it was an experience that called on their resilience, collaboration, and leadership skills that will carry them well beyond this program.

A Moment That Reflects Something Bigger

This day was more than a royal visit. It was a reminder of what’s possible when students are supported, challenged, and given space to grow.

We’re proud of the Sacred Heart community for saying yes to something new, for leading with purpose, and for showing what it means to nourish new beginnings.
