The Advent season is alive and well in our schools it is a time for reflection, generosity, and hope. It is also a moment for our community to come together to “Open Doors,” which aligns with our three-year Spiritual Theme: Open Doors, Build Bridges, Nourish New Beginnings. This year, we are focusing on the first call to action—Opening Doors—and what better way to exemplify this than through the joy of music and community connection?
At the start of Advent, the talented St. Emily Choir, led by dedicated teachers and Choir Directors Nadeige Altidor and Andrea Bouris, captured the spirit of the season during a day filled with Christmas cheer. The choir had the unique opportunity to perform carols at two special venues: the RCMP Headquarters and the Carleton Lodge Retirement Home.

This event wasn’t just about singing; it was about Be Community, one of our Strategic Commitments. It was a day where voices and hearts united, spreading joy to everyone they encountered. Residents at Carleton Lodge beamed as the beautiful voices of St. Emily students filled the room, while RCMP staff were treated to the warmth of Christmas melodies amidst their busy days.
As Pope Francis reminds us:
“To open the door is to proclaim that the Church, like Jesus, is the home of compassion and mercy, where no one is rejected or forgotten.”
Through these small acts of kindness—visiting with seniors, sharing music, and bringing smiles—we truly lived out his message. These moments highlight the power of connection and the joy that comes from opening our doors to others.
School Principal Greg Rusch emphasized that events like this are only possible because of the remarkable dedication of the students, staff, and families of St. Emily. Their generosity captures the spirit of the Christmas season and reflects our continuous journey as a Catholic community.
