AI for Students, by Students: St. Anne’s Tech Squad Takes the Lead

St. Anne School’s grades 4 to 6 students had the exciting opportunity to explore the world of artificial intelligence (AI) during a Lunch and Learn session. The event, held during recess in the school’s learning commons, introduced students to the amazing capabilities of AI tools like Canva and School AI. What made this session truly special was that it was led by none other than St. Anne’s very own Tech Squad—a group of tech-savvy students passionate about discovering and teaching AI tools to their peers.

The Tech Squad, a student-led initiative, is dedicated to two main objectives: enhancing students’ understanding of new AI technologies and empowering them to critically analyze media and content produced by artificial intelligence. This focus on critical thinking is especially important in today’s world, where AI is becoming an integral part of our daily lives. The Tech Squad aims to equip their classmates with the knowledge and skills to engage with AI tools responsibly.

Under the guidance of Chris St. Louis (Resource Teacher), Stephanie Matteo (French Teacher), and Joanne Blackburn (School Principal), the Tech Squad organized an engaging session that introduced their fellow students to the power of AI. The students explored Canva, a design tool that can create anything from posters to presentations, and learned how School AI can assist them with various tasks. With hands-on demonstrations and easy-to-understand explanations, the Tech Squad helped their peers navigate these tools while fostering an environment of curiosity and collaboration.

The Lunch and Learn session was not only educational but also a lot of fun. To celebrate their hard work, the Tech Squad and their classmates enjoyed a pizza party afterward—a well-deserved treat.

This initiative at St. Anne is a wonderful example of student leadership and collaboration, showcasing how students can take the lead in learning about and sharing new technologies. It also highlights the importance of fostering critical thinking and digital literacy in young learners, preparing them to be thoughtful and informed users of AI in the future.

St. Anne School is proud to see its students take the lead in shaping their learning journeys, and they look forward to seeing how the Tech Squad continues to inspire their peers in the world of technology and beyond!
