Like any lavish Parisian Café, the tables were dressed with crisp white tablecloths. Beautiful origami flowers graced the centre of each, and stunning art creations adorned the walls. The aroma of freshly baked patisserie wafted through the air. However, this was not a pastry shoppe you would find near the Eiffel Tower in Paris. This was a Grade 5/6 Immersion classroom at Georges Vanier School in Kanata, transformed for their second Annual French Café.
The students collaborated on a name, logo, and menu, turning the classroom into a high-class Café.
All classes were invited to visit the 100% French Café, which was led entirely by the students for two days. As each class visited, the students, eager to practice their French, rotated through the different roles of hostess, waiter, baker, ‘barista’, cleaning crew, dishwasher, and cashier. All of the employees were professional and spoke French well.
The entire experience was in French to promote oral communication and culture and to create a sense of community. Croissants or macarons? At this cafe, there were no wrong choices! Five-star rating!
