Heart to Art Honours Turtle Island

Turtle Island Mosaic Project is an art project about The Indigenous Creation Story and so much more. It is also about how a Kindergarten teacher and a high school Art teacher collaborated to create an outdoor learning space with a message – all while having fun.

With their mutual love of the outdoors and a desire to highlight and honour Indigenous culture together, along with their students, they created a mosaic hopscotch game to show the story of Turtle Island.

The aim was to create art that connected to the earth, with the earth. The kindergarten students at St. Thomas More made hand impressions in clay. The impressions were then fired and glazed at Immaculata High School. The grade 12 high school Art students designed mosaic stepping stones that incorporated the little hands. Each stepping stone visually expressed a section of “The Creation Story.” This was an excellent Learning Partnership between schools.
