Air Quality in OCSB Schools: 2023-2024 Ventilation Improvements

Your child’s safety and well-being remain our top priority at the Ottawa Catholic School Board. We want to keep you updated on the measures we’re taking to ensure your child’s safety during in-person learning this fall. Our Planning and Facilities Team remained busy this summer monitoring, installing, and implementing various improvements to optimize the air quality in our schools. We focused on ensuring that all the schools have high-functioning ventilation systems. As each school facility is different, the improvements made will vary from one school to another. Through federal and provincial government funding, ventilation for current and future students.

Ministry Funding for Ventilation and How the OCSB Has Put it to Work

2022-2023 School Year

Ventilation Funding: $8.8M

  • 10 ventilation projects in progress or planned
  • 43 schools to receive an investment

2023-2024 School Year

Ventilation Funding: $7M

  • 13 ventilation projects in progress or planned
  • 12 schools to receive an investment

Examples of school-specific improvements

  • Enhanced maintenance and commissioning of ventilation equipment at all OCSB schools
  • Capital investments to replace aging rooftop mechanical equipment
  • Installation of 225 unit ventilators in portable classrooms to provide fresh air ventilation and air conditioning
  • Installation of ceiling circulation fans in classrooms which incorporate UV-C light technology
