COVID-19 in your school: What parents need to know

Many families that have chosen in-person learning for their child this fall still have questions about COVID-19 and how it will impact their child’s education. To help you, we wanted to share a useful tool to check your child for symptoms every day and let you know about the OCSB Supports page on our website that contains a COVID-19 Dashboard.

A tool to check your child for COVID-19 symptoms daily

Parents need to check their child for symptoms every day before sending them off to school, so we wanted to let you know about an excellent tool Ottawa Public Health has come up with to help you with this task!

OCSB Supports – school-related information during the pandemic

With all the information to navigate during this pandemic, we wanted to make it easier for parents to find the information they’re looking for, so we launched a new section of our website called OCSB Supports. Here you will find the most up to date information from the school board related to all things COVID-19.

COVID-19 cases impacting OCSB schools

On the OCSB Supports page, you will also find our COVID-19 Dashboard, which reports the following information and is updated daily:

  • student cases of COVID-19
  • staff cases of COVID-19
  • classes closed due to COVID-19
  • cohorts closed due to COVID-19
  • schools closed due to COVID-19

I tried to sign my nephew up for online classes but he was switching from Grade 6 to 7 and we were not sent the proper paperwork to register so he was not accepted online. Then we went to register him at the school but they said they are at capacity. What are our options now? Thanks

Many parents have inquired about switching their children from in-school learning to the virtual program. We are striving to accommodate as many families as possible, but at the moment there is a waitlist for students wishing to enter the virtual program.  Please contact your child’s school to be placed on the waitlist and you will be contacted once there is space in a virtual class for your child.
If your nephew is on the waitlist and wishes to continue with learning from home, please have him follow the work posted in their regular classroom Hapara Workspace.

My daughters school now has a single case of COVID reported. How often will the numbers for the closed class be updated? Are cases that emerge after that class closed, among students and staff sent home to quarantine, being reported on the dashboard?

The dashboard is updated whenever we get a confirmation of a new case from Ottawa Public Health, including new cases that emerge after a class closure.

I am aware that I can not request a change to online learning, but, due to the increasing COVID cases around the city I don’t feel safe anymore sending my JK daughter to in-person classes. What options do we have if we have changed our minds because of the evident second wave of the pandemic?

Please contact your child’s school to be placed on the waitlist and you will be contacted once there is space in a virtual class for your child. If your child is on the waitlist and is learning from home, please have them follow the work posted in their regular classroom Hapara Workspace. Take care.

How often is the dashboard updated? My child’s school has a case which has closed a cohort. It was reported to parents on September 16th but it’s not listed on the dashboard.

We are still working through this process with Ottawa Public Health (OPH). Our goal is to update the dashboard every day at 3 p.m. If, however, we receive additional information from OPH after that deadline, we will update the dashboard with that new data. — OCSB Communications

Your website ways the dashboard is updated daily. Last update was Sept. 16th at 10:30 a.m. It is now Sept. 17, 8:30 pm……???

Hello,

I just want to draw your attention that at some elementary schools class (JK & SK) they don’t allow students to go to wash room to clean their hands before lunch or snack time. Is that acceptable??
The washroom is in the classroom. They only put hand sanitizer for them. I don’t think that is enough in COVID time. I agreed to send my son to school because i watched the video that you created with all new measurements of cleaning and disinfecting for kids before meals and during the day. By the way, my son got spider bites many times during silent/rest time.

Also, according to my knowledge that all Catholic Schools belong to a board and the board issue rules and regulations for all schools but i noticed that what is acceptable to bring to school or to do there in one school is prohibited in another one and vice versa. Would you please contact me for more info and to know about your action?

Regards,

FYI – The dashboard published 2020 09 16 @ 1630 contains a data error – stating 4 students @ 3 schools in the summary table, however the source data shows only 3 students @ 3 schools.
