When parents/guardians are involved in their children’s education, everyone benefits – students, parents, teachers, schools and communities. Great schools can become even better places to teach and learn, and student achievement often improves. Parent engagement includes placing an emphasis on making learning an important part of a child’s day, supporting students at home and at school, and participating in the life of the classroom, school, and community. Parents sometimes need guidance in knowing how to best support their child with their school work. Opportunities for additional involvement are not always clear. This webpage provides parents in our school community with helpful resources that have proven to be effective in improving the relationship between parent and student.
The Parent Tool Kit is a booklet that describes hands-on activities and key messages about what parents can do to support their child in doing homework, helping with projects, and making real life connections to the classroom. Studies have shown that learning in the home is the one type of parent engagement that has the greatest impact on student success and achievement. The Parent Tool Kit has been developed to help promote parent engagement and to help parents understand their role.
Parents have a primary influence on their children's attitudes towards school, their learning, and their future success. In 2010, the Ontario Ministry of Education produced Parents in Partnership: A Parent Engagement Policy for Ontario Schools. This document provides the supports needed to connect parents at the local level and to help ensure that they have the skills, knowledge, and tools they need to engage fully in their children's education and in the life of their schools.
The Planning Parent Engagement guidebook has been developed for parent groups and school staff to use in planning school-based activities to complement and support parents’ efforts at home. The activities are based on the understanding that students are members of a family and by supporting families there is a better chance that students will succeed in school. The activities described in the guidebook serve as examples that schools can use or adapt to meet the needs of their own school community.
