Descriptions - FSL programs

Navigating your way through the many different options for FSL programs can be difficult. Below, is a brief summary of the options available to our students at each grade level.

  • Kindergarten - Students in half day kindergarten programs receive 50% French Immersion instruction. Students in full day programs offer 25% Extended French instruction. However, starting in September 2012, 15 new full day kindergarten school sites will begin offering 50% French Immersion (instead of the usual 25%). This pilot model will be evaluated to recommend this new model for ALL full-day kindergarten students.
  • Grades 1 to 3 - Students spend 25% of their time (or 75 minutes per day) studying the basics of French in our Extended French programs.
  • Grades 4 to 6 - Students can continue with 25% Extended French, or can move up to 50% French Immersion (or 150 minutes per day). Boosting French to the 50% French Immersion route then allows for students to graduate with the required hours and credit accumulation to obtain a French Immersion Certificate.
  • Grades 7 and 8 - Students can go even further by adding another 40 minutes of French instruction, so that they will take five (5) of their eight (8) classes in French (equalling 190 minutes). Or, they can choose to remain in Core French where only one class (40 minutes) is taught in French.
  • Grades 9 to 12 -Students can dive into full French Immersion, taking ten (10) of their courses in French over these four senior high school years. Again, this will give them the required amount of FSL instruction hours required to obtain a French Immersion Certificate. Or, students can choose to remain in Core French where they must only take one (1) course in French over four years.
